Preface

M.F.Akhundzadeh stands on the row of the best Azerbaijani writers, poets and playwrights. Especially his plays are master-piece of Azerbaijani literature and art. In these plays he deals with actual problems of his time. He criticizes the contrasts of feudal society, illiteracy and naivity of the people.

“A Story about the Botanist-Doctor Monsieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Mastali Shah” is one of the best satirical comedies written by the great playwright M.F.Akhundzadeh.

Seyran Aghabeyli was quite right in his choice. He translated the comedy into English on the eve of M.F.Akhundzadeh`s 200th jubilee. The translation is quite successful. As an editor of the translation, I approve and appreciate it. I found great dedication and enthusiasm in this service for both English and Azerbaijani literature and art. I hope S.Aghabeyli will not spare himself to translate new Azerbaijani literary and scientific works into foreign languages though he is 75.

I wish the younger generation to follow S.Aghabeyli to add to our rich literature, art and science more and more translations.

I sincerely thank, and congratulate him for great effort to translate such a valuable masterpiece into English!

I heartily wish the author success in his further creative activity!

The author of this translation and I – the editor express our sincere thanks to the founder of “Khazar University” professor Hamlet İsakhanli for rendering close assistance in publishing of this play by M.F.Akhundzadeh. We also express our gratitude to the collaborators of The Kitab Klubu (The Book Club), especially to its director Elkhan Rzayev for assisting in publishing of this brilliant play!

The editor of the translation of the comedy “A Story about the Botanist-Doctor Mon-sieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Mastali Shah” Babayev Sayadullah, the professsor of the Azerbaijan State Univer-sity of Foreign Languages.

MIRZA FATALI AKHUNDZADEH
(1812-1878)
Biography and Creative Activity

Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh was a talented poet and the founder of Azerbaijan drama genre. He was one of outstanding representatives of progressive Azerbaijani culture, philosophy and literary criticism.

M.F.Akhundzadeh was born in 1812 (the exact date is unknown) in Nukha (it’s called Sheki now). His father Mirza Mammad Taghi came to Nukha from Khamna, Southern Azerbaijan. The same year he married Nana Khanum. In 1814 Mirza Mammad Taghi again moved to Khamna with his family. But by some reasons Fatali’s parents divorced. Nana Khanum and little Fatali moved to Horrand in Southern Azerbaijan to live under the protection of her uncle Akhund Haji Alaskar. In 1825 H. Alaskar’s family moved to Ganja. The same year they returned to Nukha. Haji Alaskar paid a great deal of attention to Fatali’s education. In 1832 he sent Fatali to madrasa in Ganja. He got his education from the famous Azerbaijani poet Mirza Shafi Vazeh. Seeing Fatali’s rare talent M.Sh.Vazeh taught him the secrets of different sciences. He also learned the Russian language. In 1834 Akhund Haji Alaskar took young Fatali to Tiflis and asked the head of the Caucasian Government Baron Rosen to give Fatali a job in his office. Fatali worked as an assistant of interpreter in the department of oriental languages, further till the end of his life he worked as an interpreter in the civil department, afterwards in the military one. He also took part in Iran-Russia, Russia-Turkey important official negotiations. And soon in state service M.F.Akhundzadeh achieved great success. He got such military titles as sergeant in 1842, second lieutenant in 1846, lieutenant in 1850, junior captain in 1852, lieutenant colonel in1854 and colonel in 1873. He was awarded several orders and medals by Russian, Persian and Turkish governments. In Tiflis he got acquainted with outstanding public figures and writers, as A.Bakukhanov, I.Gutgashinli, G.B.Zakir, the founder of Georgian drama G.Eristavi, decembrist-writer A.A.Bestujev-Marlinski the polish revolutionarist Tedeush Lado Zablotski and so on. These acquaintances played great role in extension of his outlook, interests, knowledge, development of his literary activity.

M.F.Akhundzadeh also got acquainted with the works of Russian thinkers and scientists such as Lomonosov, Derjavin, Karamzin, Griboyedov, Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Belinskiy, Chernyshevskiy, Dobrolyubov and so on. Having read those writers’, critics’ and thinkers’ works M.F.Akhundzadeh owned the progressive ideas of Russian culture civilization and art.

1850-1855 was the prosperous period in M.F.Akhundzadeh’s creative activity. During those years, he wrote six brilliant comedies and put the foundation of drama genre not only in Azerbaijan, but in the Near East as well. Those comedies were the followings: “Mullah Ibrahim Khalil – the Chemist ’’ written in 1850; “The Botanist-Doctor Monsieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Mastali Shah” written in 1850; “Khirs Guldurbasan” written in 1851; “The Adventure of Mardi-Khasis” or “Haji Kara” written in 1852; “The Story of Murafia – lawyers” written in 1855. With those comedies he brought a fundamental changes in Azerbaijan literature and put it on new rails of development.

In 1842 M. Fatali married Akhund Haji Alasgar’s daughter Tubu Khanum. But his family life was not so lucky. 13 children were born in the family. Only two of them lived a long life. They were Rashid and Nisa. M.F.Akhundzadeh paid special attention to the education and behaviour of his children.

Rashid finished the classic gymnasium and studied in Belgium University, became a highway engineer. Mirza Fatali himself taught his daughter Nisa Khanum Persian and Russian languages and brought her up in the spirit of quite modern style.

As M. F. Akhundzadeh couldn’t achieve his high and sacred ideas and the death of his children terribly influenced on him, he grew older than his age, his health became poor day by day. As a result he got heart disease and his health became worse and worse. On the 27th of February 1878 the great writer’s heart stopped beating. In accordance with his testament he was buried in Tiflis Muslim cemetery near his teacher and friend M. Shafi Vazeh’s grave.

M.F. Akhundzadeh’s poetry had an important place in his literary activity. As a poet his pen name was “Sabuhi”. His first artistic poem was “The Complaint on Modern Time”. This poem can be divided into two periods. The first part is full of pessimism. But the second part is written quite in the spirit of optimism. In the first part the poet deals with his hard life, his surroundings and friends. But in the second, optimistic part M.F.Akhundzadeh describes Tiflis and its beautiful environment.

M.F. Akhundzadeh’s second poem was written in 1837. It was dedicated to the great Russian poet Pushkin’s death and was called “The Oriental Poem”. The death of the great poet in duel brought for Fatali deep depression and grief. He decided to write a poem dedicated to Pushkin in the classic Persian language.

Dramas take the most important place in M.F. Akhundzadeh’s creative activity. M.F. Akhundzadeh’s comedies are written in realistic principles. They describe real life and welfare of the people. In his plays M.F.Akhundzadeh deals with actual problems, criticizes the conflicts and contrasts of the feudal society. The comedy “The Botanist-Doctor Monsieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Mastali Shah” is one of the best comedies written by M.F.Akhundzadeh. The dramatist wrote his comedy on the basis of real facts. In 1840-ies the french scientist Aleksis Jordan came to learn and explore flora of Karabakh, and in his scientific argue with other world botanist-doctors he proved his scientific rightness. In his comedy M.F.Akhundzadeh in the image of Monsieur Jordan described just the great French botanist-doctor Alexis Jordan. In the image of dervish Mastali Shah the writer exposes the swindlers, cunning men who deceive and rob the illiterate people. Monsieur Jordan is the representative of the world of science, enlightenment and progress who contradicts dervish Mastali Shah. Dervish Mastali Shah has come from a kept up feudal country, but Monsieur Jordan is from a developed bourgeois country, from France.

With the image of Shahbaz bey playwright approves aspiration of the youth who long for education, to achieve the European culture and civilization.

M.F. Akhundzadeh’s comedies prove that he deeply knew the peculiarities of the comedy genre. He belongs to the generation of rare talented comedygraphs.

In all social systems and periods M.F.Akhundzadeh was valued greatly. His grave is in Tiflis and the Georgians have installed a huge monument on his grave as a symbol of great respect to him. A lot of schools, the Republican library, the Western Slav University are named after the great writer M.F. Akhundzadeh in Baku. There is a beautiful park in the centre of Baku named after M.F.Akhundzadeh with his monument in the middle of it.

I, Aghabeyli Seyran Sanan oghlu valued M.F.Akhundzadeh’s poems, plays, stories, greatly and read them with unbounded love. On the eve of his 200th jubilee I planned to make him a present, and came to a conclusion to translate his most lovely comedy “A story about the Botanist- Doctor Monsieur Jordan and the Famous Sorcerer Mastali shah” into Engilish, and I`m pleased that I could do it! I kindly introduce the comedy to the readers and performers.

Seyran Sanan oghlu Aghabeyli, October 2012, Baku. Azerbaijan.

The first act takes place in early spring, a day after Novruz bayrami 1263* in Takla-Mughanli, Karabakh district. Sharafnisa khanum brushes wool in the second room crying in a low voice. Her younger sister Gulchohra is playing nearby.

Gulchohra: Aghabaci*, why are you crying?

Sharafnisa khanum: (she takes by her hand and pushes it away) Get out and go to hell!

Gulchohra: (she stretches her hand towards Sharafnisa) Aghabaci, for the sake of  God, say, why are you crying?

Sharafnisa khanum: (pushing away her hand again) Get away to hell, I say! Let me do my work.

Gulchohra: (with the same manner) You don’t do work, but you are only crying. Tell me please, why are you crying? If you don’t tell, I’ll go and call my mother. Tell me why are you crying? (she tugs by her headscarf)

Sharafnisa khanum: (she pushes her angrily) Go to hell! You impudent! She won‘t leave me in peace! She won’t let me do my work!

Gulchohra  falls down, then gets up crying goes to the room where her mother is.

Sharafnisa khanum (alone): Oh, you impudent, she’ll go and complain of me to our mother. Oh my God, if she comes and asks me why I am crying, what shall I say? Oh, I’ll never say for what I’m crying. It’s better I’ll deny it. I’ll say I was not crying.

She rubs her eyes with her headscarf quickly; at this moment the door opens, Shahrabanu khanum enters.

Shahrabanu khanum: You, girl, why did you push and pull down Gulchohra?

Sharafnisa khanum: May she perish, she doesn’t leave me in peace. Since the morning she did not let me brush two handful of wool. She always plays a trick on me. She either drags the wool from my hand or pulls my headscarf; at the end, I had enough of it and I pushed her away slightly and she came up to you crying.

Gulchohra: By God, she says a lie, mother. She didn’t brush wool at all. She shed tears continuously; I asked her not to cry, but she pushed and pulled me down. I fell down on my back. (She cries rubbing her eyes)

Shahrabanu khanum: Sharafnisa, you needn’t to cry. What’s wrong with you that you cry? Thank God, your father and mother are safe and sound. Your handsome bride-groom is in your sight. You have got plentiful food, you have all kinds of dresses. But why do you cry?

Sharafnisa khanum: Mother, by God, I didn’t cry. (She pinches Gulchohra) May you perish, when did I cry?!

Again Gulchohra starts to scream

Sharafnisa khanum: Mother, by God, I didn’t cry! Thank God my father and mother are safe and sound, why should I cry?

Shahrabanu khanum: (laughing) But why don’t you say that your bride-groom is in your sight?

Sharafnisa khanum: Who is my bride-groom?

Shahrabanu khanum: Don’t you know who is your bride-groom? And whose bride-groom is your cousin Shahbaz bey? If God allow, in 20 days your father will play such a wedding for you that the praise of it will be told everywhere in Karabakh. The day before yesterday your father was writing a letter to his friend Gurban bey from Zerdab to send Shamakhinian musicians to your wedding.

Sharafnisa khanum: (she presses her low lip between her thumb and forefinger and raises her head up) Wow, what things my mother is saying. Shahbaz bey is leaving in 10 days. I don’t know for whom my father is doing wedding preparations.

Shahrabanu khanum: (in surprise) Is Shahbaz leaving? Where is he going? Whom is Shahbaz bey going with? What are you saying? For the sake of God, don’t say a lie. Now I understand that you really were crying. It’s a real fact that young girls have no wit. Their eye tears often are shed. Say, who told you that Shahbaz bey is going to leave us?

Sharafnisa khanum: (bending her head down) He himself.

Shahrabanu khanum: Well, where is he going?

Sharafnisa khanum: I don’t know, either to France or to Paris. May it perish, I cannot say it correctly.

Shahrabanu khanum: Well, whom is Shahbaz bey going to Paris with?

Sharafnisa khanum: He is going with our guest Monsieur Jordan.

Shahrabanu khanum: With that Frang* who gathers sticks and straws! What for? What contact has Shahbaz with that French? What has he lost in Paris?

Sharafnisa khanum: I don’t know. He is an ignorant teenager. Monsieur Jordan spoiled his brain saying that girls and ladies come together with men in the parties and companies with open faces, and he also told him a lot of other things. Now he became mad about travelling to see Paris. At first he wants to get his uncle’s permission, if his uncle doesn’t allow Shahbaz bey himself will cross the Araks on the horse back. He will join Monsieur Jordan there. Together with Monsieur Jordan he will go to Paris to observe it.

Shahrabanu khanum: (she throws down the sock, which she was knitting) Hey, Gulchohra, go to the next room and call Shahbaz to come here. I want to listen what he will say about this matter.

Shahrabanu khanum: I used to say Hatamkhan agha, my man, play the wedding of these children soon. I’m afraid of Shahbaz, thousand times a day he changes his mind. He neglected and didn’t listen to me and that’s the result.

At this moment the door opens, Shahbaz bey enters.

Shahbaz bey: Emidosti*, what’s wrong? May it be a happy news!

Shahrabanu khanum: (frowned) Shahbaz, they say you are leaving for Paris, France. Is it true?

Shahbaz bey: (smiling) Can‘t I go, emidosti? I’ll go and I’ll come back. I’ll also buy for Sharafnisa a kerchief as a present with which French girls cover their heads.

Sharafnisa khanum: I don’t need to know with what French girls cover their heads. Better buy and cover their heads because you are ready like a bird to fly to them from Karabakh.

Shahrabanu khanum: A good answer! The kerchief which you buy cover the French girls’ heads, Sharafnisa doesn’t need it. Tell me, are you wilful or, haven’t you any leading person instead of your father!

Shahbaz bey: Surely, I can’t go without my uncle’s permission. Monsieur Jordan himself will ask him for my permission.

Shahrabanu khanum: (angrily) Very good, you have lost your way and trace, go wherever you want! I’ll call Hatamkhan agha just now, I’d like to know who is Monsieur Jordan that takes his nephew to Paris? By God, I’ll do him such a bitter harm that he will lose his way where he came from. He will forget Paris. Very good, you go! Now I’ll call Hatamkhan agha. I want to see how it can be. Only 20 days are left till playing your wedding, how dare you to go to Paris?!

Shahbaz bey: How can it be that 20 days are left till our wedding? I’m a child yet. I’ll not marry so soon. I’ll not play a wedding and marry so early. I’ll not play a wedding by force.

Shahrabanu khanum: (screaming) Yes, by force. Surely, 2 years ago a wedding should be played for you, if Sharafnisa were not a child. When such ignorant children like you are left bachelor they become criminals, robbers, thieves and so on.

Shahbaz bey: People become criminals out of hunger and thirsty. Thank God, I have all necessities.

Shahrabanu khanum: (with irony) I wonder what beggars became robbers and robbed the people?! For the sake of God, don’t force your mind. You are a very ignorant fellow. Now go and do your work.

Shahbaz bey bends his head down and goes out.

Shahrabanu khanum: Are Hatamkhan agha and Shahrabanu khanum dead that the frenchman can deceive Shahbaz and will take him to Paris? Hey, Sharafnisa, I forgot to ask you, what words did that Frenchman say who wanted to deceive and take Shahbaz to Paris?

Sharafnisa khanum: I don’t know, he said that beautiful girls and women come together with men in the parties and companies with open faces.

Shahrabanu khanum: What else did he say?

Sharafnisa khanum: I don’t know, he said those girls and women use to dance, talk and laugh together with young men.

Shahrabanu khanum: (impatiently) Oh, what else did he say? You only repeat one and the same word.

Sharafnisa khanum: Oh, he said a lot of other words, too. I remember only those words. But the rest I forgot. I can’t remember, I don’t know.

Shahrabanu khanum: (angrily) Oh my God! Hey girl, how can I tell Hatamkhan agha without any reason that Shahbaz bey expresses his sympathy to Parisian girls, that’s why he joins Monsieur Jordan and leaves us? Your 16 year old daughter Sharafnisa khanum envies the girls and women of Paris. Nobody, neither goes, nor comes back yet, she sheds her eye tears like torrent and is moaning!

Sharafnisa khanum: (standing up) Wow, oh my God, may earth bury me! What mother says! The Earth shook under my feet. Let me run away.

She goes out of the room.

Shahrabanu khanum: (turning towards her younger daughter) Gulchohra, your father is behind the house, he is talking to shepherds there. Tell him to come here as soon as possible. I have an urgent talk to him.

Gulchohra runs out.

Shahrabanu khanum: (to herself) What ungrateful people are these French people! They won’t understand our kindness. I, a foolish woman, was serving Monsieur Jordan for breakfast with sheep cream, butter, every supper with plov and roasted beef, when he goes back to his country not to say that Karabakhian elat* women are not clever and capable, that they can’t respect and serve guests well. Say, how one could do his best after this matter! My kindness has lost its effect, indeed.

The door opens at this moment.

Hatamkhan agha: (enters) May it be goodness wife, what has happened that you have called me urgently?

Shahrabanu khanum: (frowning) You ask what has happened?! See, your guest who gathers sticks and straws, whom you feed well, wants to deceive and take your nephew with him to Paris.

Hatamkhan agha: What? Does Monsieur Jordan want to take Shahbaz to Paris? Who says it?

Shahrabanu khanum: I say! Shahbaz himself said it to Sharafnisa!

Hatamkhan agha: (he roars with an unnatural laughter) Shahbaz knows that your daughter has a gentle and sentimental heart and he wants to tease her. Perhaps it’s the reason of Sharafnisa’s cries. Ha-ha-ha. You and your daughter have no sense of two pennies. You lose your head for nonsense.

Shahrabanu khanum: (screaming) You always come up to everything indifferently. He is an ignorant teenager, may be that French deceived him with some useless words. You are a man. Will bloodshed happen if you call both men and ask them what has happened?

Hatamkhan agha: All right madam, for the sake of God, don’t scream! I’ll call them just now and at your presence I’ll ask them about the matter. Be patient!

Curtain fall

Act 2

The second act takes place on that day in the same room. The room is laid well with carpets. Flour sacks, butter skins and woolsacks are spread everywhere. Hatamkhan agha is sitting on the rug at the topside of the room. His wife Shahrabanu khanum is sitting on his right. Her chin is covered with veil. She has a white headscarf on her head, scutcher also is sitting quietly. Shahbaz bey is sitting opposite his uncle. He takes by the handle of his dagger and is waiting about what his uncle will say. One of the woolsacks is covered with a carpet. It’s put on the left side of  Shahbaz  bey. Monsieur Jordan is sitting on it in French cloth with open head, crossing his legs. He has folded a cigar with tobacco in the size of a forefinger. He lights it and begins to smoke. Hatamkhan agha’s elder daughter Sharafnisa khanum came before them, hid behind the rug which was hung in front of the mattresses, blankets and pillows. They were piled on one another. She is spying them to see what about they will talk. Thus, Hatamkhan agha turning his face towards Monsieur Jordan begins to speak.

Hatamkhan agha: Monsieur doctor, I heard you want to take Shahbaz to France, is it true?

Monsieur Jordan: Yes, Hatamkhan agha, I would say it to you myself. Because it’s pity such a quick, swift, agile, adroit, educated young fellow doesn’t know the French language. I intend to take him to Paris, teach him French and send him back. Because he is interested in French, he’ll learn it quickly. Having been in a contact with me he has kept in his memory some French words and expressions.

Hatamkhan agha: (turning his face towards Shahbaz bey) Shahbaz, do you really want to go to Paris?

Shahbaz bey: Yes, uncle, if you allow I’ll go with Monsieur Jordan and then I’ll come back myself.

Hatamkhan agha: What for do you want to go there, balam*?

Shahbaz  bey: To learn the French language, uncle!

Hatamkhan agha: Why do you want to learn it, dear? You needed to learn the Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Russian languages, God bless, you have learnt all of them in madrasas which were opened with the help of our state.

Shahbaz bey: Uncle, French language is very important for me. Last year you sent me to Tiflis to get permission to find the archive. Allahverdi bey’s son Tanriverdi had learnt French in Warsaw. In all parties he is more respected though that person knows no more languages except French and Turkish.

Hatamkhan agha: Balam, you are a child yet. All these are quite nonsense. Human being should have a wit. The wit will not increase by mastering one more language. A man should know the customs and traditions of the people of his time by any language, which he knows in order to be able to plan his work.

Shahbaz  bey: One of such human societies in modern life are people of Paris. From your talk, it becomes clear one should be aware of Paris people’s customs and traditions.

Hatamkhan agha: It’s not bad, you can learn their customs and traditions if you want.

Shahbaz bey: How can I be aware of customs and traditions of Paris people if I don’t go there?

Hatamkhan agha: It’s very easy. I learn and know them by having contact with Monsieur Jordan and by listening to his speech, though I haven`t seen any other country but only Karabakh.

Shahbaz bey: Uncle, I don’t understand how could you be aware of customs and traditions of Paris people?

Hatamkhan agha: Just now, I’ll explain to you my child! I came to such a conclusion, what customs and characters we have the Parisians have the opposite. For instance, we dye our hands with henna, but French people don’t. We cut and shave our hair, but they put on their heads wigs; we put on caps at home, but they sit without it. We wear slippers, but they wear boots; we eat by our hands, but they eat with a spoon. We take bribe openly, but they take it in secret; we believe all, they believe nothing; our women put on short dresses, but theirs long ones; by our traditions one man can marry several women, but by their tradition a woman marries several men.

Shahbaz bey: Uncle, I didn’t catch all what you say.

Hatamkhan agha: Why don’t you understand, balam? To marry several women means one man isn’t satisfied with one woman. To be married to several men means one man is not enough for a woman. The first tradition belongs to us, the second tradition belongs to Parisians. As during long winter nights Monsieur Jordan read French books and explained their meaning in details for us, now it`s enough to have imagination about Paris and Parisians and leave away the decision to go to Paris.

Monsieur Jordan: (with irony) Ha-ha-ha! Hatamkhan agha, I’m surprised, why such a logically educated, clever, sagacious and brave man as you, is not a member of any consultation club. Though I can’t dare to interfere the principle – customs, but I’d like to declare some words if you allow.

Hatamkhan agha: You are welcome, hakim Sahib!* Every word of yours is pleasant for us.

Monsieur Jordan: (with proud) Hatamkhan agha, my aim to take Shahbaz bey to Paris is first to teach him a good behaviour, the French language and French sciences. I’ll introduce him to the King. You did your best and served me well and I’ll ask the King of France an award for Shabaz bey and I’ll send him back. Because I’m under the protection of the King’s authority. I belong to the government’s official scientists and I am the King’s respectable close friend. But it becomes clear that you are against the travel. That’s why I must prove the importance of the travel. (He puts his hand into his pocket and takes out a notebook from it, opens and shows them some grass, which were put there in good order), if I didn’t come to Karabakh who would know that on the summer pastures existed these grasses. Before our botanists and doctors monsieur Linney, Turnefor and Bertram used to suppose that they existed only on the Alps in America, Africa and Switzerland. But coming here, I’ll prove to the Parisian Academy of sciencies that the former scientists made a gross mistake. This flora exists on the Karabakhian mountains too. I’ll research this flora and I’ll apply it into experience and I’ll make new classification quite different from the ancestors, for instance. This grass which you see (he shows one of the plants) it’s called in Latin “agantus”, by my experience it’s very useful for diarrhoea. Monsieur Linney supposes it the third grade and monsieur Turnefor supposes the fourth grade, but I’ll suppose it the second grade. This (he shows another plant) in Latin is called “Serastrum Alpinium”. It’s an important medicine for eyes. Monsieur Linney supposes it the seventh grade and monsieur Turnefor supposes it the sixth grade. But I’ll consider it the tenth grade. (He shows the third plant) The name of this plant in Latin is “Jamlina Africana”. It’s the remedy for the tooth ache. Monsieur Linney supposes it the fifth grade and monsieur Turnefor supposes it the third grade, but I’ll suppose it the eighth grade. The name of this grass in Latin is “Gombretum”. Till modern time it was not famous in Europe. But in American flora it was known. Now I’m very glad that I found it on Karabakh mountains. It’s very useful to cure cold catch. Monsieur Linney supposes it the sixth grade, monsieur Turnefor supposes it the fifth grade, but I’ll suppose it the fourth grade and I’ll write the essense and specifics of all found plants. In this way I’ll declare it to the world. And my fame will be wider than Linney’s protector George Glifford’s. And my service for science will be higher than all German scientists who searched and found potato disease.
